Defining a Community School
A community school, also known as a charter school, is a public school independent of any other district, run by a private board of trustees and funded with state tax dollars. There is no revenue generated from local property taxes for community schools as with traditional public schools. Through a contract with the State Board of Education, Washington Park Community School is held accountable for meeting agreed-upon goals and standards set forth by the State of Ohio. This includes teacher certification and administering all state mandated diagnostic, achievement tests. It is audited and reviewed annually by the state to ensure the educational and financial programs meet the standards established within the contract and Ohio Revised Code. The school also receives a Local Report Card and school rating from the Ohio Department of Education.
Enrollment to Washington Park is open to all students within the Cleveland Municipal School District. The student body is comprised of children previously enrolled in: Cleveland public, parochial schools, students new to the area and from children who have been home schooled. Washington Park Community School does not discriminate in admissions on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, or disability. Additionally, it does not limit enrollment on the basis of intellectual ability, measures of achievement of aptitude or athletic ability.
