About Our School

Washington Park Community School is located in Newburgh Heights, OH.  We opened our doors in 2001.  The founders of our school are Mr. Allen Sowa and Mrs. Helene Jasinski.  Certified teachers instruct all grades K-8 and are instrumental in the progress of our school.   We believe very strongly that all students have the ability to learn, improve, and succeed.  Our commitment to our young people is strong and unwavering and we will continue to work together to make sure that no child is left behind.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of Washington Park Community School is to produce scholars who are good citizens in school, in the community and the neighborhood in which they live and the world that they share.  Washington Park Community School will be a virtue-centered and child-centered school committed to academic excellence, emphasizing attention to being and becoming just, wise, courageous, persevering, responsible, generous and caring citizens.  Emphasis will also be placed on the importance of public participation through civic action and community service.  These are the values and goals that this community school will instill in the young minds of tomorrow’s leaders.

Defining a Community School

A community school, also known as a charter school, is a public school independent of any other district, run by a private board of trustees and funded with state tax dollars.  There is no revenue generated from local property taxes for community schools as with traditional public schools.  Through a contract with the State Board of Education, Washington Park Community School is held accountable for meeting agreed-upon goals and standards set forth by the State of Ohio. This includes teacher certification and administering all state mandated diagnostic, achievement tests.   It is audited and reviewed annually by the state to ensure the educational and financial programs meet the standards established within the contract and Ohio Revised Code.  The school also receives a Local Report Card and school rating from the Ohio Department of Education.
